18 July 2019: The Castlemaine Perkins Brewery in Milton, home of Queensland’s favourite beer, XXXX Gold, has been granted a 15-year extension to its licence under State Government legislation designed to protect the historic site from the encroachment of other development.
The Brewery has been part of the Milton skyline for more than 140 years and has moved with the times as Brisbane’s urban environment has changed.
Lion’s Supply Chain Director Ian Roberts said the process of applying for a new licence had shone a light on the brewery’s commitment to being a good neighbour to the residents and businesses that now also call Milton home.
“Since 2009, we have spent millions of dollars on improvements to the brewery to limit our environmental impact. Just a few weeks ago we completed a $2 million solar project, which will reduce our annual carbon emissions by 1260 tonnes,” Roberts said.
“We have also significantly reduced our already low noise and light emissions, all of which are well within the limits allowed under our development consents.
“20 years ago, Milton looked very different to how it does today. Previously it had been an industrial epicentre, but its proximity to the Brisbane CBD made it the perfect location for high-density residential developments.
“At the time, we knew the potential impact this could have on our ability to continue to brew at the Milton site, and we were keen to work with the government and the community to ensure we could futureproof the brewery’s operations.
“Over the last decade, this registration has delivered the right balance between amenity for local residents and operating certainty for a Queensland icon, which has called Milton home since 1878.”
Minister for Planning Cameron Dick said the planning amendment protects both jobs and manufacturing operations, as well as the iconic XXXX Milton brewery.
“My number one priority as a Palaszczuk Government Minister is to create and protect Queensland jobs, and that is what this amendment enables – providing certainty for the next 15 years and securing those jobs for the workers at the brewery,” he said.
“XXXX have already demonstrated their commitment to the neighbourhood, and today’s decision confirms that residential and commercial manufacturing can exist side by side with proper planning.”
Roberts added, “XXXX was born here, it is brewed here, and our roots run deep in Queensland.”
