Just in time for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and the return of tourists to regional NSW, Tooheys brewer Lion is sending a keg convoy carrying more than 2,500 litres of beer from the state’s largest brewery in Lidcombe to bushfire affected towns on the NSW South Coast.
To welcome locals and visitors alike back to pubs and clubs for the long weekend, a truck carrying more than 50 free kegs will depart Sydney today bound for Kiama, Berry, Jamberoo, Shoalhaven Heads, Bomaderry, Nowra, Jervis Bay, and all the way down to Merimbula, Tathra, Bega, Bermagui, Narooma, Moruya, and Batemans Bay.
Tooheys Brewery Director Marcus Anderson was joined by Senator for NSW Hollie Hughes at the Tooheys Brewery to make the announcement this morning.
Lion Managing Director James Brindley said: “NSW has endured an incredibly tough few months. We want to support the regional pubs re-opening in time for the long weekend, particularly in areas that have been the hardest hit – by bushfires, loss of tourism, and of course COVID-19.
“The first time you’re back at your local might be different to what you are used to. New hygiene and safety measures are in place and this is all about keeping everyone safe.
“But the one thing that we guarantee to be exactly the same is the fresh Tooheys on tap. It simply cannot be beaten.
“March 23 was the most gut-wrenching day our industry has ever seen. We did our bit to minimise the financial burden, announcing within hours that we would credit venues for unused kegs left stranded at pubs and clubs around the country. This equated to about $30 million.
“Since then our draught quality team has cleaned more than 15,000 beer taps and couplers, so they are in perfect working order when venues open their doors again.
“We want to do all we can to support local pubs and clubs in NSW on the road to recovery.
“We hope this truck full of free kegs will make it a little bit easier for them to turn their taps back on this week to welcome more people – and bring their communities back together.”
Senator for NSW Hollie Hughes said this weekend marked a significant milestone for the state.
“It is so fantastic to see NSW manufacturing in action, with Tooheys making fresh tap beer to support local venues across NSW – but particularly in the regions that have been so heavily impacted by the bushfires, and more recently COVID-19,” Senator Hughes said.
